05.Sep.2010 Fantasy and Reality
Every one fantasizes to some degree whether about the future, what life could have been, a life with another, what others do, while most people fantasize sexually. The latter is a difficult confession for most people.
The Benefits of Fantasy
Fantasy and imagination can allow us to see for our lives and futures, perhaps an answer or better life toward which we can aim. Without visions and dreams, life can be monotonous. Men and women can feel that life is pointless and even depressing if they have no future plans and dreams. Fantasy is often pleasant and allows us to dream, envision and imagine.
Parameters For Fantasies
However men and women are best to put parameters on their fantasies. To fantasize about the future and goals is a great thing. But when we dwell on what we cannot or shouldn’t have, life will seem to be selling us short. We can spend much time in fantasy but little time in things that are productive for our lives.
For example, to dwell on another as a marriage partner when we are already married to someone else will only lead us to disappointment or catastrophe. We are dwelling on something that will set us up for disappointment with what we have. Rather than fantasizing about another, better to plan and visualize ways which will improve the marriage that one already has.
Fantasy And Boundaries
When fantasy could damage your life, discipline yourself to stop. Masturbation, pornography, dwelling on thoughts of another that is not your spouse, or dwelling on thoughts that are criticism of others are all detrimental to you and those that you love.
These are boundaries that we should place on fantasy and imagination. We are dwelling on something that will set us up for disappointment with what we have.
Everyday Life And Fantasy
The everyday state of our lives is a great measuring stick. These are the everyday facts of our lives. But then each of us has a choice. Do we damage our lives by succumbing to wrong fantasies or do we allow the truths of the Bible to enhance our lives?
The marriage we have is a part of our creation. The job that we have is a part of our creation. The child which we have is a part of our creation. If we fantasize great things for these things and then place action behind these fantasies, then one will likely see great results. This means that we may be frustrated with an area of our life but we can envision a better future and find Bible truths that could enhance this area. However if we neglect these things or even waste time fantasizing about things that are detrimental to what we have, we will liklely end up disappointed, angry and depressed.
Fantasy is a valuable part of our makeup. Each of us needs to choose to use it wisely so that it enhances rather than damages one’s life.
